Tis been growing season! A Natural Witch is more apt to grow his or her own herbs and plants. As for this Natural Witch, I live in an apartment and found some challenges in raising an herb garden. I hope that you enjoy this and begin to reconnect with the vibrations of nature!
Apartment dwelling can making having a variety of herbs most difficult to grow, maintain, and tend to as they mature. Though starting an herb nursery inside should not be a complicate task, a few things should be evaluated first before attempting. Learning the ins and outs of apartment dwelling gardening has been an experience. Here are some tips on how to make the most of an apartment herb garden.
First
It is important to observe where in the apartment the maximum amount of sunlight is coming in, then how long it is there. Now, ideally, it is best to find the easterly direction in the apartment, to start an herb garden. Even if there is no window in the easterly direction of the apartment, find a window that does get a lot of exposure from the sun.
The main ingredients of any strong garden are water and sunlight.
Second
Being in an apartment you have to improvise on the soil issue. Obviously, it is not possible, in most apartments’ dwellings, to have raised garden beds or dig holes right outside the back door. In order to over come this, get a starter kit that can be purchased at most any local hardware store in the gardening section. They are relatively cheap, very simple and easy to use; plus, the come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Select one that will fit in the area selected. At this time, begin to plant!
Third
When planting any type of herb, it is always best to draw a diagram of what is being planted where in the starter kit. Having an idea of what an herb is suppose to look like and what they look like as they grow up – are two totally different things.
Take your time doing this because as a seasoned gardener knows, not all herbs get along with others. As the seeds being to mature, it is possible to lose a plant or two, if they do not get along.
At this point and time, the most ideal spot in the apartment has been located for maximum sunlight exposure and there is a diagram of what seeds have been planted where.
Fourth
The final task is making plans how to maintain the maturity of the herbs once it comes time to transplant them – not to mention that most apartment herb gardeners still want an astatically pleasing household environment. Here are a few ideas and they vary from styles of apartments naturally.
Window sills
Depending on the ledge size of the apartment window sill, it is possible to have a small to medium size pot, about four to six (4 to 6) inches, resting on it.
If the window sill is large enough, the possibility exist to use an eight (8) inch pot. Since most herbs are not going to be very large and the maintaining/trimming will occur, one of those sizes should be sufficient.
Entering the apartment
If you have steps leading to the door, normally there is a platform. Typically, the top of the platform (that is outside) has about a four (4) to six (6) inch spot on either side, to allow you to place pots. This is a wonderful location!
Patio Area
Some apartment dwellers have areas with a patio. This can be a great area to put the long eight (8) inch potters. Fancying the pots with the outside décor in the patio area is a great way to be creative for the outdoor barbeques or relaxing with a cup of coffee.
Final Thought!
The lasting benefits to having an apartment herb garden will be having fresh seasonings available to cook and dress delightful foods; while having the simplicity of each natural smell blending together for a delightful fragrance.
Making unique and individual spices is another great learning experience!
